Jaws

JAWS is a screen reader program for Windows. Although it is very powerful, it is very simple to set up and use.

It's essential, it's very useful. It's a very clear voice and easy to understand and something to reinforce his poor eyesight. My son uses it at a medium speed setting and it took him six months to really learn it. He uses it quite frequently, probably 2 or 3 times a week but as he's going into year 9 at school he will probably use it every day. He uses it to research his school work. He really enjoys using it.

Information

JAWS is ideal for those who have no, or very limited, sight, as it guides you through Windows, controlling it with your keyboard.

It is fully scriptable, which means that JAWS can be configured to read nearly all Windows based programs. However, this scripting may sometimes need to be carried out by a sighted person.

JAWS uses the Eloquence speech engine, which makes it easy to understand, and you can alter the speed and style of the JAWS voice.
