Opportunities
Computers, specialist adaptations and software can play a vital role in creating chances for disabled people. Information Technology opens up opportunities through communication, access to services, education and employment.
- Communication:
By being able to just blink or move a finger, disabled people can use a computer and specialist software to speak, to write, to do all of the same things that people without disabilities use computers for.
People with Autism, Learning Disabilities, learning difficulties or low literacy can benefit enormously from computers, using symbols and pictures to communicate.
Isolated disabled people and people with mobility difficulties can use computers and the internet to stay in contact with friends, find support and play a more active role in society.
- Access to Services:
Disabled people are able to use computers, adaptive technology and the internet to access public sector, voluntary sector and commercial services. This means they can manage their care packages and benefits as well as being able to bank and shop. This is very important for people who are housebound, struggle with mobility or are in rural locations.
- Education and Employment:
Computers and Adaptive technology can help disabled people take advantage of education or employment opportunities. Colleges, companies and individuals are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of remote learning and home working. Computers, Adaptive technology and the internet enable disabled people to find and take advantage of educational and employment opportunities.
